Christmas Book Advent #3: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson

The Herdmans are the worst kids in the history of the world. They lie, steal, smoke cigars, swear, and hit little kids. So no one is prepared when this outlaw family invades church one Sunday and decides to take over the annual Christmas pageant.

None of the Herdmans has ever heard the Christmas story before. Their interpretation of the tale — the Wise Men are a bunch of dirty spies and Herod needs a good beating — has a lot of people up in arms. But it will make this year’s pageant the most unusual anyone has seen and, just possibly, the best one ever.

We save this book for when my kids are out of school because it isn’t a book you can read in one day. It’s only 128 pages, but it’s fun to read for half an hour at a time for three or so days. I love seeing my kids talk about it between readings and re-enact the pageant with each other.

This story is a fun way to teach kids about the nativity. My kids hear the story every year and sing the songs, but this story is about kids like them, shouting to their town that Jesus was born. And the kids love it.

I, as a parent, enjoy seeing the Herdmans learn about the birth of Jesus for the first time, and noticing how touching it is to see the event through their eyes.

A fun read that teaches something important. You can’t do better than that.
